Title: SJ-ULTRA Classification Scheme

  1. Tischa12-13-10

    Dear Colleagues,

A group of us met recently to go over the land use data/images and classifications to develop a proposal for the rest of the group. The documents attached are what they have developed so far and now need your input so that we can have a set of classification standards that the group as a whole uses and have consistency with the GIS data.

Please email Victor with any specific questions, otherwise send your comments to the group by “reply all” so we can have a conversation. We will discuss any modifications at our next research meeting on January 17 and 18th.

    Thank you,
    Tischa

Thanks for sending this, Tischa. I really like the SJ ULTRA proposed scheme, but since many of the historical classifications we will use to assess change over time (the ones that Olga compiled for us) are not as detailed as this one, I am wondering what the intent of this scheme is. Will it be used for some new classification? I hope someone can fill in my knowledge gap here. Thank you in advance!

      Sincerely,
      Myrna

Hola: Gracias por esta informacion! Tengo algunas sugerencias/commentarios:

    1. My main concern has to do with the built-up land. How will you account for mixed land uses? For instance, you have commercial uses on the first floor of a building and residential uses on the upper floors, etc. One option is to classify according to dominant use, but if there were a more precise way to define multiple uses, that would be better. Mixed uses are quite prevalent.

      Dear Luis,

Is there tax parcel data for San Juan? It is often more useful for getting this kind of “use” information than are satellite-derived classifications of land cover (residential high and low density). Even the latter classification based on an assumption that we can separate residential from commercial use based on electro-magnetic response is really impossible. Ancillary data is sometimes used to assist in this but is painfully time consuming. That’s why it is really more accurate to call these classifications land cover maps only. Tax parcel maps don’t tell you which part of a property, particularly large ones, are dedicated to which type of activity, but at least will tell you if the property includes mixed uses such as commercial/residential, or pasture/forestry.

      Myrna
