Carmen M. Concepción teaches at the Graduate School of Planning, University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, where she has worked for the past 16 years. She completed a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning and a postdoctorate in Environmental Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. She holds a master degree in Planning from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras and a BS in Physics from UPR-Mayaguez. Her research has focused in the areas of environmental policy and politics, environment and development, and environmental social movements, in which she has published in diverse academic and professional journals in Puerto Rico and abroad.

Concepción was director of the Social Science Research Center of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras during the period 2005-2009, and served for a year (2006) as Acting Editor of the Revista de Ciencias Sociales, a peer review journal published by the Center. Before joining the faculty of the Graduate School of Planning, she taught at San Diego State University and at the New School for Social Research in New York.
